Humane Societies and SPCAs (Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) are traditionally seen as caring for domestic animals. However, they are concerned about the welfare of all animals, including farm animals, and many are active in promoting and increasing farm animal welfare in Canada.
The CFHS and many of its member societies have worked to promote the humane treatment of farm animals particularly in regards to intensive farming and transportation. The BC SPCA developed the SPCA Certified humane labelling program to encourage the humane treatment of farm animals in BC and are working with the industry to encourage best practices for farm animals.
Across the country, many humane societies and SPCAs have been active in working with local and provincial governments to help improve legislation, and are working with animal use industries to encourage more humane animal husbandry.
Humane societies and SPCAs also routinely perform animal cruelty investigations regarding farm animals, and some even investigate slaughterhouses. Most of the societies involved in investigations of farm animals have their own facilities or have arrangements with farms that will take in seized animals when they need. The CFHS, along with many of its member societies, works to raise awareness of farm animal welfare issues.
The CFHS is focussing on several farm animal welfare initiatives including the establishment of a new process for development and review of Codes of Practice under the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC). In addition, the CFHS participated in the review of national transportation regulation – and is supported in these endeavours by its member societies.
