Each year in Canada, over one quarter of a million homeless cats and dogs are temporarily housed in animal shelters. Their lives depend on one thing: people choosing to share their homes with a loving animal in need.
That’s why the CFHS is once again acting as the lead Canadian partner for Iams’ “Home 4 The Holidays” shelter pet adoption drive. This annual campaign, now in its 12th year, runs October 1st to January 4th. The goal is to help place 1.5 million orphaned pets worldwide into loving homes this holiday season.
The first option when looking for a new pet should always be the adoption option. Unlike animals sold in pet stores or online, animals adopted through reputable humane societies, SPCAs and rescue organizations will have been tested to ensure they are healthy and behaviourally ready for a new home. The modest adoption fee usually covers spaying/neutering, microchipping, vaccinations and a full check-up by a vet — services that could otherwise cost up to $1,000 if purchased individually by a new pet parent.
For those whose heart is set on adopting a cat or dog of a specific breed, it is important to know that 25 percent of the dogs and many of the cats available for adoption in shelters are purebreds. There are also many breed-specific rescue groups from which people can adopt.
