During the Easter season, people are too often swayed to purchase a rabbit on impulse without realizing the care and attention that rabbits need. Although you think it might be nice to bring home a live bunny for Easter, we ask you to seriously consider whether you have the time and space to provide for a bunny for the rest of its life. The reality is that too many of these creatures end up in shelters or abandoned in the wild.
If you are thinking of purchasing a rabbit, make sure you are making an informed decision, not an impulse one. When you make a decision to bring a rabbit into your home, do your homework as to what a rabbit needs to live a full and happy life as your pet. Here are just a few ideas:
Once you have carefully researched rabbits and their needs, contact your local shelter. Many shelters take in small animals such as rabbits, birds, and gerbils and all of them are looking for a new home. If your local shelter doesn’t take in rabbits, they may be able to help get you in touch with a rabbit rescue organization near to you that has adoptable rabbits in their care.
