A number of local animal shelters across the country are at full capacity this summer — and that’s not a good thing. Many shelters are feeling the crunch as their kennels and cat rooms fill up with strays or surrendered pets and their adoption numbers can’t keep up.
There are many reasons why animal shelters are seeing a surge during the summer months. With an increase in outdoor activity, animals are more inclined to explore their environment thus increasing their chances of getting lost. Pets are also sometimes lost or left behind during a move to a new home. Other animals are surrendered due to circumstantial situations. No matter the reason, the outcome will result in a new resident for the animal shelter.
In an attempt to help reduce intake and increase adoptions, animal shelters have been working with local media including newspapers and radio stations to bring this concern to the public’s attention. Animal shelters that have reached maximum capacity are under a significant amount of stress and it’s important that this message resonates within the community.
