Ontario’s animal welfare act gets stronger penalties and enhanced protection

on flag

The CFHS is encouraged by the recent legislative updates to the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, its first significant update in just under 90 years. Under this new bill, the Ontario SPCA will now be able to inspect more facilities and animal abusers will face stronger penalties.

The prohibited behaviours and offenses section now states that no person shall cause or permit an animal to be in distress or train an animal to fight with other animals. It is also illegal for a person to own or possess equipment used in animal fighting or training animals to fight. The amended act also indicates that OSPCA inspectors will now be permitted to inspect the facilities used to house animals used for entertainment and exhibition. The penalties for persons guilty of an offence can vary from $1,000 to $60,000 with possible imprisonment of up to two years.
