Urging Candidates to Debate Animal Welfare Issues

On October 14th, 2008 Canadians will go to the polls to decide which candidate will be elected in their riding. This election and the government that we choose will have a tremendous impact on whether Canada’s outdated and ineffective animal cruelty laws are finally updated to correct the inadequacies of the current legislation.
The CFHS encourages all Canadians to join us in bringing animal welfare to the forefront of this election campaign so that all voters are properly informed about where party stands on this important issue.
Questions for candidates
- What steps would your party take, if any, to make the welfare of farm animals a higher priority of government?
- Are you concerned about livestock transport times? Would your party move to reduce transport times and improve conditions for animals in transit and at slaughter? If so, how?
- Do you think industry self-auditing is the way to go for food safety and animal welfare or do you support stringent government oversight of slaughterhouses?
- Do you think the animal cruelty sections of the Criminal Code need to be changed? If so, what changes would your party propose?
