Animal Shelters (Grades 3-5)
Suggested Level: Grades 3-5
Subject Area: Social studies, Language Arts, Math, Family Living
Goal: To understand what an Animal Shelter is and how you would adopt a pet from a local animal shelter
Objectives:
- What is an animal shelter?
- Who works in an animal shelter? – Discuss the types of jobs there.
- Adopting a pet from an animal shelter
Materials:
Procedure:
- With the help of the students make a list of what the purpose of an animal shelter is – home for stray animals, a place to adopt a pet, investigation of cruelty to animals on farms or in homes – and who works there.
- Individually, students work on the sheet “Working at the Animal Shelter”
- Using the blackboard, brainstorm with the students to come up with the responsibilies of pet guardianship and what the pet’s needs are: Cost, care, time etc.
- Students individually work on the sheet “Your Perfect Pet”
- Students then divide into groups of 5 or 6 to prepare one of the 3 scenarios with the idea of acting for the class.
- Students preparing the adoption scenarios will use the Adoption contract to assist them
- Students preparing the “losing a pet” scenario will use the sheet “No place like home”
