Criminal Code
In 1959, the CFHS noted that there were problems with the archaic wording of the animal cruelty sections in the Criminal Code, and in 1980 we officially approached the federal government to update the legislation. A bill to amend the animal cruelty provisions of the Criminal Code was first introduced in 1999. Since then, a total of eight versions of this legislation have been introduced in Parliament. The first seven died on the Order Paper when Parliament was prorogued or elections were called. Due in part to misinformation and fear of animal rights groups, this issue has become contentious, but the CFHS will continue to push for effective legislation that will adequately protect all animals from criminal animal cruelty.
