Suggested level: Kindergarten – Grade 2

Subject area: Social studies, Language Arts

Goal: To provide students with the necessary skills and tools to prevent injury from a dog bite

Objectives: Students will

  1. understand body language and facial expressions of people
  2. understand the body language of dogs
  3. know when it is safe to approach a dog
  4. how to greet a dog
  5. learn appropriate behaviour when approached by a dog

Materials:

Procedure:

  1. Ask students to give an example of how they are feeling today. Choose a few as examples to the class. Teacher may need to give examples her/himself to clarify each expression – happy, sad, angry, shy. scared.
  2. Students are then asked to identify different dog behaviours with the aid of the pictures provided. Identify when a dog is happy, sad, scared, angry, ready to bite etc. Discuss what the dog does with his tail and mouth with each feeling.
  3. Using the sheets provided students will also learn of situations when it is inappropriate to approach the dog – even if it is a dog the child may know – e.g. – in a car, with puppies, with food, sleeping, hurt or sick.
  4. With the aid of the sheet “How to meet a Dog Safely”, students will then discuss how to greet a dog – letting the dog sniff you first (so the dog knows who you are). Then petting the dog under the chin rather than on top of its head so the dog doesn’t feel threatened.
  5. Using the sheet “Animal Safety is Fun” discuss how students react when approached or knocked down by a strange dog.
  6. Students can roll play a “Strange Dog Scenario” where the teacher pretends to be the strange dog and the students stand like a tree. Also “Lie like a log “ if the dog has knocked the childs over.
  7. Discuss with the students the points made on the “Do and Don’t” list
  8. Learn the “Dog Bite Song” to the tune of “The Wheels on the Bus” to reinforce what they have
    learnt.
  9. Will it Bite Me? Activity Sheet.
