Dog Bite Prevention II (Grades 3-5)

Suggested Level: Grades 3-5

Subject Area: Social Studies, Language Arts

Goal: To provide students with the necessary skills and tools to prevent injury from a dog bite

Objectives: Students will # Understand body language in people # Apply this knowledge to body language in dogs # Be aware of situations when it is not safe to approach a dog # Discuss appropriate behaviour if a strange dog approaches a student

Materials:

Procedure

  1. Briefly discuss people’s ability to convey their feelings through facial expressions, using students to provide examples – happy, sad, angry, scared, etc
  2. With the aid of the dog pictures provided help students identify the dog’s feelings in each picture. Discuss which of these pictures would be unsafe for a person to approach the dog.
  3. In pairs or individually, students work on the safety tips sheet. Discuss any questions the students may have.
  4. Discuss and role-play appropriate behaviour if a strange dog approaches you – stand like a tree or lie like a log.
  5. Allow older students to discuss their responsibilities when walking their own dog – poop pick-up, meeting other dogs when their own dog is on a leash (stand quietly and let the dogs sniff each other, if either dog begins to exhibit signs of aggression, pull their own dog away and firmly tell the other dog to “Go Home”.)
  6. Activity sheets can be done individually or in small groups and displayed in the classroom
