Europe Bans Battery Cages

At a meeting last June, European Agriculture Ministers voted to phase out conventional battery cages for chickens in Europe by the year 2012. Although such a decision is a step forward for animal welfare, it is very disappointing that the target date is so far in the future. The Royal SPCA is working to urge farmers to convert sooner to alternative systems like those accredited by their Freedom Foods program.
