Good News for Circus Animals

bear Two new municipal by-laws have been enacted recently to prohibit circuses with wild or exotic animals. The City of Kelowna, British Columbia passed a by-law in early 1999, followed by the District of Salmon Arm, British Columbia in May. This brings the total number of Canadian municipalities with such by-laws to 15 in British Columbia and five in Nova Scotia.

CFHS’ video, The Plight of Performing Animals, was instrumental in convincing municipal councillors in Kelowna and Salmon Arm that circuses with wild or exotic animals are inappropriate and therefore not welcome in their communities. CFHS supported the efforts of the local SPCAs by writing to the mayors and councillors urging them to adopt the by-laws.

tigers CFHS hopes that the momentum will continue across the country and more municipalities will vote in favour of animal welfare by prohibiting performing wild or exotic animal acts.

You may consider contacting your local councillors if your municipality does not already prohibit circuses with wild or exotic animals. CFHS has an information kit available for $12. The Plight of Performing Animals video is $9.95. They can be ordered by calling our office (1-888-678-CFHS) or though our website.
