Shadow Retires

Canada Customs first discovered Shadow, a black Labrador retriever-spaniel mix, at the St. Catharines SPCA (Ontario) in 1991. Her gentle disposition, curiosity and desire to please made her a good choice as a drug and weapons detector dog and that is how she spent the past six years with her trainer, Brian Devanney. At the age of eight, Shadow was officially retired in Halifax on November 16, 1998.

Over the years Shadow sniffed out more than $500 million in drug seizures. Mr. Devanney says, “To her this is all play. This is what she lives for – just a few words of praise and a pat on the head. “Shadow will live out her retirement years with Mr. Devanney's father.

The Nova Scotia SPC established an award to honour and recognize the efforts of animals performing special services or heroic acts on behalf of their human companions. Shadow was presented with a plaque as the first recipient of this award.
