On February 3, 2005, Liberal Senator John Bryden introduced his private member’s bill, S-24. This bill took the penalty section from Bill C-50 and left the offences unchanged from their inadequate and archaic form. The CFHS and other animal protection groups strongly opposed this bill. Unfortunately, the introduction of this bill changed things dramatically, as most industry groups threw their support behind it. Bill S-24 received Second Reading in the Senate on March 10th and was referred to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee, but it died on the Order Paper when Parliament prorogued November 29th for an election.
