Public Opinion Survey
A national survey by SES Research of 1,002 Canadians was conducted from November 5-9, 2006. The survey posed four questions about Canada’s animal cruelty law. The survey is considered accurate to within +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
Here are some highlights:
- More than 85% of Canadians want wild or strays animal protected from cruelty. The response is virtually the same from all regions of the country, from urban and rural areas and from those who hunt or fish.
- More than 76% of Canadians support changing the law so that animal cruelty crimes are no longer treated as property crimes. In fact, people living in rural areas, people who hunt or fish and people who traditionally vote Conservative are even more likely to support this change.
- More than 67% of Canadians would look favourably on a local candidate who supported changes that would make it easier to convict those guilty of serious animal abuse. The response to this question from people who hunt or fish regularly was 74%.
