Devastating fire destroys Humane Society of Durham Region

Newmarket, ON, (December 17, 2008) – It is with great sadness that we report that the Humane Society of Durham Region was destroyed in a fire last night. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Sadly, over 160 animals lost their lives. Nine dogs, two cats and one rat were rescued from the facility, and are currently in the care of a local veterinary clinic and Oshawa Animal Services.

“This is a horrific event and our hearts go out to the Humane Society of Durham Region.” Says Kate MacDonald, CEO of the Ontario SPCA. “The Ontario SPCA will be assisting the Humane Society in any way that we can during this emotional time.”

The Ontario SPCA will continue to update the public as the investigation into the cause of the fire unfolds.
