Ottawa – The Exploits Valley SPCA, located in Grand Falls-Windsor, NF, is asking for donations to help it care for the large volume of animals it has taken in since a flash flood forced more than 1,100 residents of Badger, NF, to evacuate their homes last month. The SPCA is in need of financial assistance to help pay for the additional operational costs of housing these extra animals, including heating and utilities, and increased staff time. In addition, the high volume of animals has caused physical damage to the shelter, which will need repairs over the next few months.
This small SPCA, which has a maximum capacity of only 40 animals, has taken in more than 80 animals belonging to Badger residents. The SPCA is still housing more than 15 animals belonging to residents who have not returned to their homes. Strays and other adoptable animals under the SPCA’s care were placed in foster homes during the worse of the crisis. Lack of space also means the shelter has lost valuable revenue from its regular boarding kennel operations.
Officials are unable to say when the majority of Badger residents will be able to return to their town. Many homes will need to be rebuilt, which can only happen after the thaw. In addition, those residents who have returned to Badger may be evacuated again when the ice water melts later this spring. The SPCA estimates it will be months before their operations can return to a more normal volume.
Please give generously to support the people of Badger, and to ensure the continued care of their companion animals during this crisis.
