RENFREW COUNTY, ON, (March 14, 2007) – Sarah Eno and Jason Labine, both of Mackey, have been charged by the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals under the Criminal Code of Canada with causing unnecessary suffering and failing to provide adequate food, water, and care for an 18-month-old, male, boxer-type dog named Tyson that was found chained to the wall in their residence.Following receipt of information from a member of the public, investigators from the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Branch executed a search warrant at the Eno and Labine residence in Mackey. The investigators were shown the dog, which appeared emaciated, had large bleeding wounds on both ears, had no access to water, and was kept chained to a wall.
Upon examination by veterinarians and the completion of various medical tests, results showed that there was no medical reason for the dog’s emaciated condition. The conclusion was that the dog had been suffering from malnutrition.
The dog was surrendered to an animal hospital and then transferred into the care of the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Branch. The Branch staff placed the dog in a foster home and monitored him weekly for weight gain. The dog is progressing well – he has gained over 10 pounds, is in excellent body condition, his hair coat and quality of his skin have marked improvement, and the ears are healing well.
Eno and Labine are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice, Pembroke on March 27, 2007. If convicted they could face a maximum six-month jail term, a maximum fine of $2000.00 and a two-year prohibition from owning any animals.
