The Board of Directors of the Hamilton Burlington SPCA announced today the resignation of CEO Jim Sykes effective Friday September 11th. “Jim has indicated to the board and staff that the time is right for him to move on to new challenges at the provincial and national levels within Animal Welfare and we wish him well and thank him for his service” said Board Chair John Janisse. Sykes began his tenure as CEO in early 2004. In that time, he has successfully overseen the growth and expansion of many programs within the HBSPCA and has significantly and positively raised the public profile of the HBSPCA through a number of new program initiatives. They include the construction of an in-house animal hospital that will ensure the best care for both shelter and community animals in distress. Meet Your Match a science based adoption program developed by the ASPCA and implemented first in Canada by the HBSPCA has doubled the number of successful adoptions and lives saved by the shelter, and the expansion of the hugely successful Pet Encounter Therapy Program that allows people and pets to connect who otherwise might not have the opportunity or benefit. ““I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished in Hamilton Burlington but there is a great deal more work to be done across the province and in fact the country. I look forward to providing leadership in those efforts” said Jim Sykes. Sykes is currently in his fourth year as the volunteer Chairman of the Board of the Ontario SPCA.
Sykes and the Hamilton Burlington SPCA have been recognized as award winning leaders in Animal Welfare program development and training throughout Ontario and Canada.
