Ontario SPCA PAIN Fund helps provide emergency care to injured dog and cat. York Region Branch appeals for help to cover costs

NEWMARKET, ON, (April 5, 2007) – The Ontario SPCA recently rescued two animals in desperate need of assistance. Neeko, a sixteen-month-old Chihuahua, arrived at the Ontario SPCA York Region Branch February 22, 2007 after his owners discovered he had re-broken the leg he’d recently undergone surgery to fix. Blue, a two-year-old petite female cat adopted from the shelter in March 2007, arrived at the Branch 13 days following Neeko’s arrival after falling from a 10-story window and fracturing her right humerus and right femur. She had slipped through a slightly open window when her owners were out of the apartment and was found lying in a snow bank. Both owners surrendered their animals to ensure they received the care they could not financially afford themselves – and to be adopted into loving homes.

On February 26, four days after Neeko was surrendered, he underwent surgery to fix his broken front right leg with the use of a bone plate. Sadly, veterinary examination determined that the bone in his leg was not able to heal and he underwent surgery April 2 to amputate the leg. While Neeko is unable to walk at this time, this plucky and handsome little fellow is in good spirits! Blue underwent surgery on March 8, 10 and 15 and is doing well in post-operative care. She is walking and eating well, and is purring most of the time.

The combined cost of Neeko and Blue’s surgeries and post-operative care is upwards of $3,800. While Neeko and Blue’s medical care is being covered under the Ontario SPCA’s Protecting Animals In Need (PAIN) Fund – a designated fund of the Society which is supported by donors to help animals that have been injured or abused and require extensive medical care – it is the responsibility of the Branch to repay the cost.

“It is our Branch’s responsibility to replace the funds we’ve borrowed from the PAIN Fund for Neeko and Blue in order to help other animals arriving at shelters in need of emergency care,” says Ontario SPCA York Region Branch Animal Care Coordinator Jennifer Scott. “We are offering a plea to the community to help us raise the money to cover the cost of Neeko and Blue’s medical care so we can continue to be there for animals that are in desperate need with no other help available.”

The Ontario SPCA would like to thank surgical specialist Dr. Kevin Isakow for performing the surgeries.
