Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Branch concerned over number of abandoned rats: Seeks public’s help

SUDBURY, ON, (May 3, 2007) — The Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Branch is calling on the public for any information related to the abandonment of a number of domestic rats brought to the Branch last week.

On April 23 a concerned member of the public found six abandoned domestic rats in a box in the west-end Donavan area of the city, while out for a walk. On the evening of April 25 the Branch received a call from another concerned citizen that had discovered four abandoned domestic rats in the Flour Mill area of the city.

Investigations to date have not revealed who was involved with the abandonment of the rats, and the Ontario SPCA is appealing to members of the public who may have any information related to the case.

“If anyone has seen or heard anything that may help us, we would greatly appreciate their assistance. The number of domestic rats abandoned in such a short time is quite alarming,” says Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Branch Manager, Al Bentley. “Sadly, every day across the province the Ontario SPCA receives calls to rescue animals left to fend for themselves. We encourage everyone to make the humane choice and to surrender their animals to an Ontario SPCA branch or affiliated humane society rather than to abandon them.”

The Sudbury & District Branch would like to thank the concerned citizens who contacted the shelter to ensure the rats would be cared for and provided with a second chance to find a forever home.

If you have information that may help further the investigation, please contact the Ontario SPCA Sudbury and District Branch at (705) 566-9582. Information can be left anonymously. You can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). It is illegal to abandon animals, and if found, the guilty parties will be charged.
