Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Branch seeks public’s help following theft of shelter dog

SUDBURY, ON, (May 8, 2007) — The Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Branch is calling on the public for any information related to the theft of a dog from its shelter, located at located at 760 Notre Dame Avenue in Sudbury, on Sunday May 6.

The dog, named Charlie, is a black, Labrador-cross. He was stolen from a dog-run located at the rear of the animal shelter. The staff had placed the dog in the outdoor dog-run while they cleaned the inside kennels. Somewhere between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. the dog disappeared, along with its bowl of water. Charlie can be easily recognized because he is missing a square patch of fur on his back, towards the rear end. He is also microchipped.

Investigations to date by the City of Greater Sudbury Police have not turned up any leads; therefore the Ontario SPCA is appealing to members of the public who may have any information in the hopes of returning Charlie to the safety and care of the shelter.

“If anyone has seen or heard anything that may help us, we would greatly appreciate their assistance. I cannot believe that someone would steal one of our animals,” says Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Branch Manager, Al Bentley. “Sadly, many of our animals have come from abusive situations or have been abandoned – it’s very upsetting to have an animal stolen like this and to think that it may be in a situation where it is being mistreated.”

If you have information that may help further the investigation, please contact the Ontario SPCA Sudbury and District Branch at (705) 566-9582. Information can be left anonymously. You can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
