PEI Humane Society saddened by shooting death of dog

May 12, 2011

Charlottetown – The PEI Humane Society is saddened to learn that a family’s pet dog has been shot to death by a neighbour through a window in its own home in the Community of Roseville, PEI.

“We were shocked to hear the circumstances in which this family’s pet died,” says Society Executive Director Kelly Mullaly, “It’s truly unfortunate someone felt that shooting this animal in its own home was the appropriate solution when organizations like the PEI Humane Society exist to help all Islanders, whether they own animals themselves or are affected by someone who does.”

The Society has no record of receiving any complaint or concern about the dog which was shot and killed in this incident.

“In some circumstances, just letting a neighbour know that you have concerns is enough to remedy the problem,” says Shelter Manager Beckie MacLean. “But in some instances the circumstances have gone past that point, which is when we encourage concerned citizens to file a confidential complaint with us. We can then have one of our trained Animal Protection Officers investigate and help everyone involved work toward an appropriate solution. What we do know, is that violence is never an appropriate response.”

The PEI Humane Society is a non-profit organization which operates the only animal shelter for lost, abandoned and homeless animals on Prince Edward Island.
