Public should not let actions of one humane society colour their views of animal shelters across Canada

While the recent events at the Toronto Humane Society are still being investigated, it is important the Toronto community and communities across Canada understand the actions of one humane society or Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) do not reflect the management and level of animal care at other shelters across Canada.

The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS) urges Canadians to note that humane societies are independent organizations with their own management, governance and shelter procedures. “It is wrong to paint all humane societies and SPCAs with the same brush” said CFHS Program Director Shelagh MacDonald. “These local animal shelters provide crucial service and care for thousands of abandoned and neglected animals every year and need the ongoing support of their community to continue their work.”

Membership in the CFHS is voluntary and the CFHS has no jurisdiction over its member societies. The Federation was formed in 1957 to represent its members on national animal welfare issues. In some provinces, such as Ontario, the provincial SPCA operates some local branches. Ontario also has affiliated societies that are not governed by the provincial body.
