OTTAWA, Ont. (7 August, 2007) — Amongst the large numbers of cats and dogs available for adoption, the Ottawa Humane Society (OHS) is finding itself crowded with all manner of rabbits, guinea pigs and birds all looking for new homes.About 40 of the small creatures are temporarily housed in the OHS adoption lobby, causing a space crunch as crates full of bunnies and guinea pigs line the halls and finches perch on top of cat crates. Summer is typically a busy time at the OHS, but this year has been particularly demanding as an overwhelming number of people have given up their small animals to the care of the OHS.
Though not as popular as bigger pets, small animals have much to offer adoptive families. Rabbits are highly inquisitive and intelligent animals. They can be litter trained, taught basic tricks, and are great cuddle companions, making them welcome members of the family. Guinea pigs are ideal first pets for children aged five to 12 years old, because they are simple to care for, they’re extremely gentle and they often make squeaks of enjoyment when they’re let out to play or when they know a snack is on its way.
Pet birds — such as cockatiels, budgies, canaries and finches — are colourful, vocal creatures who can provide low-maintenance companionship. Other pets, such as gerbils, hamsters, rats, degus and mice, are fun to observe, care for and play with!
For families considering adoption, summer can be a good time to integrate a new pet into the home, especially if you don’t plan on going out of town for vacation. Holidays and a typically slower summer pace usually mean more free time, which can be the ideal scenario to bond with a new animal.
Profiles and pictures of animals available for adoption can be found on the OHS website at www.ottawahumane.ca.
